24/01262/LBA Listed Building Consent: Fenestration changes, replacement signage, removal of chimney breast and installation of air conditioning unit to Grade 2 Listed Building (retrospective).

This is a retrospective application for Listed Building Consent for changes already made.

ECS believes the changes to be acceptable except for the new signage, on which the Society has objected via the “Comments” facility on the EEBC Planning website as follows:-

“The Epsom Civic Society has just one objection with regards to this retrospective application – and that relates to the new ‘Charlie and Ginger’ signage above the main entrance.

While it is certainly the case that the new signage is considerably more sympathetic to the former Wellington Public House than the unauthorized and garish signage of the ‘Cashino’ (previously ‘Agora’) amusement arcade, it still unfortunately obscures the ceramic tile “Wines and Spirits” lettering that is an important part of the historic Grade 2 listed frontage. Although the new owners have commendably left the ceramic ‘Ales and Stout’ signage at the opposite end of the ‘mirror image’ frontage exposed (unlike the former amusement arcade owners, who had concealed both decorative and historically resonant details), it is regrettable that their overwhelmingly sympathetic repurposing of this fondly remembered Epsom watering hole didn’t extend to the retaining visibility of the historic ‘Wines and Spirits’ lettering as well.

The Epsom Civic Society believes that, with a little thought, the Charlie and Ginger logo could be included in either the top part of the arched window above the doorway – or alternatively located in the middle of the premises’ frontage, under the protruding bay window. If this one small yet, we believe, important change was made, the Civic Society would be happy to wholeheartedly support the rest of the application.”
