Report on Ian West’s Walk on Sunday 9th July 2023

The weather was kind and we met up at 2pm where the Ladas pub used to be at the crossroads between Madens Walk, Woodcote Lane and Chalk Lane. There was a good turnout. It was very interesting for me as I have lived in Epsom for many years and yet know nothing about the history of many of the buildings in it. We started outside Westgate House and Ian explained its history and various changes of name. We then walked up Chalk Lane to a very early “barn conversion” which is now a row of terraced houses. We stopped outside what used to be the Chalk Lane Hotel and it was sad to see it is still a building site. I understand that the original developers went into liquidation. One member of the party had seen the show flat and had been impressed.

We ended up at the Durdans and Ian explained its history. In our party we had the current owners of the Durdans and they have kindly offered to give the members of the Epsom Civic Society a tour around the Durdans grounds in 2024, so please what this space!
